Lithophanes

What is a lithophane?

A lithophane is a special kind of picture that uses light in a unique way. They were first created in Europe in the 1820s and became very popular during the Victorian era. Back then, people made lithophanes by carving into thin, translucent materials like plastic or porcelain. When light shines behind the lithophane, the parts that were carved let more light through, creating brighter areas, while the uncarved parts block the light and look darker. This creates an optical illusion that makes the design look three-dimensional, as if it's coming to life!

Today, lithophanes are made using digital images and the latest 3D printing technology, bringing your favorite images to life in this special way. The unique way in which they interact with light makes lithophanes a beautiful and fascinating form of art that can be appreciated in many different settings.
